Mills lead USD to comeback win in home opener

Junior QB Mason Mills rallied USD to their first win of 2012
San Diego 34, Western New Mexico 27

TORERO STADIUM (09-08-12) When the USD Toreros (1-1) and Western New Mexico (1-1) met for the first time last season, the Toreros rolled to a 30-10 victory. Things didn’t go as smooth this time around.

USD kicker Ernie Collins put the Toreros on the board first with a 37-yard field goal, but near the end of the first quarter, Western New Mexico receiver Marquis Sumpter scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mitch Glasmann to give their Mustangs a 7-3 lead.

The Toreros answered in the second quarter.

Quarterback Mason Mills tossed a screen pass to running back Joe Ferguson for a 47 yard touchdown. On the next drive he hit receiver Brandon White with a 31-yard bomb that gave the Toreros a 17-7 lead at halftime.

Down but not out, Western New Mexico managed to score on their first two drives of the second half.

A 57-yard reverse for a touchdown by receiver Donald Byrd and a 21-yard touchdown run by John De La Rosa on the next drive helped the Mustangs regain the lead 21-17.

Collins’ 51-yard field goal (Tied for 2nd longest in USD history) late in the third quarter cut the lead to 21-20, but early in the fourth, Glasmann found Sumpter for their second touchdown connection of the game.

Fortunately for the Toreros, kicker Josh McIntire missed the extra point making it only 27-20 with 11:22 left to play. After that it was all Toreros.

Mills hit White once again for a 12-yard touchdown pass to make it a 27-27 tie with 5:19 left.

After the Torero defense forced a much needed three and out, Mills drove the offense down the field and threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game to receiver Reggie Bell. The 29-yard score gave the Toreros a 34-27 lead with just a minute left to play.

The Mustangs’ had an opportunity to send the game into overtime (or win by going two), but it fell short after Glasmann’s hail mary towards the end zone was picked off by safety Drew Harris. That was the senior’s second interception of the game.

The Toreros pick up their first win of the 2012 season while extending their home winning streak to eight games.

Next Saturday they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on the Ivy League’s Harvard Crimson. Kickoff is scheduled for 9 a.m. pacific time.
