Stars cruise to first-ever home win

RB Tommy Thomas (#42) & CB Christine Hernandez (#89)

CARLSBAD (05/31/2014) The North County Stars improved to 2-2 after defeating the Tucson Monsoon 42-8 in an IWFL showdown at the Army and Navy Academy. It was the first home victory in team history for the first-year franchise.

The tone was set during the first play from scrimmage when running back Tommy Thomas broke off a 78-yard run for a touchdown. She finished the game with three long touchdown runs, and that's not including the two that were called back due to penalties.

"She's one of the fastest people in women's football and she's getting better," said Stars head coach and team owner Calvin McClain. "Now we just got to work on her consistency and keep it going for the next couple of weeks, but she's looking good so far."

Cornerback Christine Hernandez proved to be a factor on both sides of the ball. The two-time WFA All-American caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Carla Duenas in the first quarter, then followed it up in the second quarter by returning a goal line interception 102 yards for a touchdown to give the Stars a 22-8 lead.

"She is one of the best defenders, if not the best corner in women's football," McClain said. "I would say she is the best corner in women's football period."

After a 27-yard touchdown run by CiCi Baston gave the Stars a 28-8 lead at halftime, Thomas added two more scores in the third quarter to seal the win.

"I can't preach enough about the offensive line," McClain added. "I'm just so happy for them right now."

The Stars will attempt to get over the .500 mark next Saturday when they return to the Army and Navy Academy to host the Phoenix Phantomz.
