Late turnovers spoil Aztecs' comeback bid at Fresno State

FRESNO, CA (10/03/2014) The Old Oil Can will stay at Fresno State for a third straight year after the San Diego State Aztecs (2-3, 1-1 MWC) suffered a 23-14 loss to the Bulldogs (3-3, 2-0 MWC) in a rare Friday night contest.

Down 13-17 late in the fourth quarter, the Aztecs had two opportunities to take the lead. Those opportunities were cut short after two passes by freshman quarterback Nick Bawden were tipped and intercepted. While the Aztec defense forced a three-an-out after the first pick, the second proved to be costly as Fresno State took over at the Aztecs' seven-yard line and clinched the game with a five-yard touchdown run by Marteze Waller.

Bawden, who was filling in for the injured Quinn Kaehler, finished his collegiate debut with nine completions for 84 yards, one touchdown, and those two critical interceptions. Sophomore running back Donnel Pumphrey carried the ball a career-high 24 times for 94 yards.

Local JCs rule College Football Saturday

With the Aztecs playing a Friday night game and the University of San Diego Toreros enjoying a bye week, Saturday's local college football schedule will feature four San Diego County junior college programs going head to head. All four teams will be hungry for a win after suffering disappointing losses in their respective games last week.

Palomar Comets (2-2) at Grossmont Griffins (2-2), 1:00 p.m. PST
Southwestern Jaguars (3-1) at San Diego Mesa Olympians (1-3), 6:00 p.m. PST
