Surge overcomes first half scare, defeats Central Cal 56-25 to remain unbeaten

SANTEE (05/09/2015) The San Diego Surge (4-0) left Santee Community Stadium Saturday night with another blowout victory, but it didn't come easy as the Central Cal War Angels (3-1) kept the game competitive during the first two quarters.

Destanie Yarbrough put the War Angels on the board first with a 45-yard touchdown off a screen pass from Chantel Nino Wiggins.

The Surge answered back immediately after a 43-yard catch and run from Deana Guidry set up a 13-yard touchdown run by Alexis Snyder.

After Central Cal's over-snapped punt set up Snyder's second touchdown, linebacker Knengi Martin returned an interception 88-yards to the endzone to give the Surge a 21-7 lead with a minute left in the first quarter.

The War Angels struck back with two touchdown passes, but with both extra points unsuccessful, the Surge held a 21-19 halftime lead.

Propelled by three touchdown runs by Jessica Springer, and two more scoring connections from Melissa Gallegos to Guidry, the Surge went on a 35-6 run in the second half to secure the win.

As a unit, the Surge defense intercepted five War Angel passes. Two of them were recorded by Kesia Williams, bringing her team-leading total to five on the season.

Next Saturday the Surge travels to Riverside to take on the West Coast Lightning.
