Lawrence's 4 TD passes lead Toreros past Western New Mexico

TORERO STADIUM (09/12/2015) In his first collegiate start, redshirt freshman Anthony Lawrence threw for 254 yards and four touchdown passes to help the San Diego Toreros (1-1) defeat the Western New Mexico Mustangs (1-1) 45-21 in their home opener Saturday night.

The main targets for the Grossmont High alum were tight end Ross Dwelley (10 catches for 23 yards & 1 TD), and former Rancho Bernardo standout Brian Riley (5 catches for 115 yards & 2 TDs).

With Jonah Hodges and Dallas Kessman out with injuries, Blake Martin and Jereke Armstrong shared the majority of the carries and combined for 179 yards. Armstrong put up 109 and went the distance twice (24 & 54 yards).

On defense USD was sparked by interceptions from Devyn Bryant (2) and Jamal Agnew (1).

The Toreros will enjoy a bye week before kicking off Pioneer Football League play at Valpariaso on Sept. 26th.
