Prep Football: #3 St. Augustine advances to 4th straight Section Finals

MESA COLLEGE (11/27/2015) After rolling over every opponent that stood in its path to a perfect season, the Mission Hills Grizzlies (11-1) finally met their match.

The Grizzlies boast one of the top defenses in the county, but on this night, they had no answer for Elijah Preston and the St. Augustine Saints (10-2) rushing attack.

The senior Silver Pigskin finalist rushed for 236 yards and three scores, sparking the Saints to a 48-14 triumph and their fourth straight appearance in the CIF San Diego Section Finals.

Saints quarterback Rodney Thompson was able to contribute to the highly successful ground game with 124 yards and two scrambles for touchdowns, the longest going for 76 yards.

“They were keying Preston a little bit, so we put in a couple wrinkles with the quarterback, just to get the eyes off of Preston so he could finish the game,” explained St. Augustine head coach Richard Sanchez.

Both of Thompson's touchdown runs resulted from play action fakes to the senior standout.

“I been working on my fakes to move the linebackers off to another place, and get the play moving so that [Thompson] could get a good hole.” added Preston.

With the victory, the Saints will take on top-seeded Helix for the Open Division Championship next Saturday at Southwestern College. The Highlanders earned their second straight shot at the title after routing Cathedral Catholic 42-14.
