Prep Football: Mater Dei & Oceanside earn 2015 section titles

Mater Dei WR/DB Eli Shelton (#14) goes 88 yards for six during the game's opening kickoff.

DIVISION IV CHAMPIONSHIP
#10 Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders (12-1) 49, Bishop's Knights (8-5) 14.

Eli Shelton returned the game's opening kickoff for an 88-yard score and hauled in three touchdown catches to propel Mater Dei to its first section title since changing their name from Marian Catholic.

This was a rematch from last year's Division IV title game, where Bishop's escaped with 19-16 win in overtime.

The tides have definitely turned since then.

The Crusaders rolled to a 35-0 lead before Mozes Mooney got the Knights on the board with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Jackson.

Shelton had a monster receiving day with 250 yards and three touchdowns off just four catches.

Crusaders signal caller Chris Jones completed 7 of 8 passes for 336 yards and found the end zone five times (4 pass, 1 rush).

C.J. Verdell chipped in with two of the most explosive touchdown plays of the game, a 30-yard run and 54-yard reception.

Oceanside celebrates its 16th section title, the first under head coach David Rodriguez.

DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIP
#8 Oceanside Pirates (9-4) 23, El Camino Wildcats (7-5) 14.

Two bitter crosstown rivals took their feud 40 miles south to face off for the Division I title.

While El Camino put up an outstanding fight, Oceanside ended up on the right side of the turnover battle as they held on to win its San Diego Section record 16th Championship.

After the Pirates drew first blood with a 29-yard field goal from Jake Gerardi, the Wildcats answered back with a 23-yard touchdown strike from Beau Gallegos to Chris Brown.

Oceanside would go on to add two more scores, including a controversial touchdown catch by Isaia Paopao that gave the Pirates a 17-7 halftime lead.

A 1-yard touchdown by Jaden Casey cut the Pirate's lead to 17-14, but with 1:49 left to play, Niko Mageo dove into the end zone for the game-clinching score.
