Tale of the Tape: LCC at Cathedral

🏈 La Costa Canyon Mavericks at Cathedral Catholic Dons
📍Manchester Stadium (Cathedral Catholic High School)
📅 Friday, August 23, 2019 🕖 7:00 P.M. PT

Our newly created "Undisputed Title" will be defended for the first time when top-ranked champion Cathedral Catholic host the visiting Mavericks, who defeated the Dons 19-7 in last year's season opener. Cathedral has not lost to a San Diego Section opponent since then, while La Costa Canyon's promising run ended in the Division I quarterfinals.

The title can only be defended amongst the San Diego Section, so if Cathedral wins, they will have two weeks before their next scheduled defense against Helix. If LCC pulls off the upset, they'll put the title on the line next week against Vista.

Breakdown

The defending Open Division champions have graduated key offensive weapons such as running back Shawn Poma and wide receiver Zion Sorani, but quarterback DJ Ralph returns along with five big and strong offensive linemen. Seniors Jordan Allen, Devin Dye, and Logan Berzins will all be key factors in Cathedral's front seven. Dons' head coach Sean Doyle needs just one win to tie legendary Vista coach Dick Haines for the 10th most wins in CIF San Diego history.

Marshall Eucker will be LCC's starting quarterback once again, and he'll have fellow senior Trevor Gonzales back as one of his top targets. First Team All-State linebacker Austin "Ozzie" Nicholas, who put up 3.5 sacks in last year's win over the Dons, is primmed to have a phenomenal senior campaign.
