Toreros defeat Princeton 42-35 in Wild Comeback
In the most thrilling game of the weekend, the University of San Diego pulled off a spectacular comeback victory over Princeton, 42-35, at Princeton Stadium. The Toreros overcame a 21-point first quarter deficit to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Princeton jumped out to a commanding 21-0 lead after the first quarter, with Ethan Clark's 55-yard touchdown run capping off a dominant opening period. The Tigers extended their lead to 35-14 early in the second quarter before USD's offense found its rhythm.
Senior running back Adam Criter was the hero for the Toreros, rushing for 105 yards and three crucial touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:04 remaining. Quarterback Tyler Voss completed 25 of 34 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns, finding his favorite target Josh Heverly eight times for 56 yards and two scores.
The comeback began in the second quarter when USD scored 21 points to close the gap. The Toreros then dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Princeton 21-0 to complete the stunning turnaround. USD's defense forced a crucial fumble in the fourth quarter that set up Criter's second touchdown of the period.
The Toreros controlled the ball for over 38 minutes and converted 14 of 21 third-down attempts.
USD returns to Torero Stadium next Saturday, Sept. 27th to kickoff Pioneer Football League action against St. Thomas.
At Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego State delivered a statement performance with a commanding 34-0 shutout victory over California before 31,369 fans. The Aztecs improved to 2-1 while handing Cal their first loss of the season.
The SDSU defense was spectacular, forcing multiple turnovers and returning them for touchdowns. Linebacker Dwayne McDougle scored on a 35-yard fumble recovery, while defensive back Chris Johnson returned an interception 97 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Quarterback Jayden Denegal was efficient for the Aztecs, completing 15 of 18 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown. His 80-yard touchdown strike to Jordan Napier in the second quarter gave SDSU a 7-0 lead they would never relinquish.
The Aztecs' balanced attack generated 321 total yards while holding Cal to just 289. SDSU's defense recorded four sacks and limited the Golden Bears to just 2.1 yards per rushing attempt.

San Diego Mesa College maintained its status as the top program in San Diego County with a 28-21 victory over rival Palomar College. The Olympians improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Mesa took control early, building a 25-7 lead by the second quarter. The turning point came when linebacker Marek Wojno returned a fumble 93 yards for a touchdown, giving Mesa a commanding advantage.
Quarterback Reggie Johnson managed the game effectively for Mesa, completing 12 of 27 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown. Vista High alum Derek McClintic led the ground attack with 51 yards on 15 carries.
Palomar (1-3, 0-1) made a late push behind quarterback KJ Chatham (Lincoln), who threw for 138 yards and one touchdown, but couldn't overcome the early deficit.
The Olympians return home next Saturday to defend their Kings of the County title against undefeated Southwestern. Meanwhile, the Comets are set to face another tough challenge at Riverside.
Grossmont College bounced back from their narrow loss last week with a dominant 48-10 victory over LA Valley College at the G-House. The Griffins improved to 3-1 on the season.
Quarterback Melvin Spicer IV was outstanding, completing 22 of 45 passes for 293 yards and two touchdowns while adding 92 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground. His 59-yard touchdown pass to Elijah Realzola opened the scoring and set the tone for the rout.
Grossmont's offense was explosive, accumulating 475 total yards while limiting LA Valley to just 150 yards. The Griffins scored in every quarter and never trailed after taking the early lead. Next up for the Griffins is a road meeting at Victor Valley.
