Oceanside, CA — The Oceanside Bombers made their debut one to remember on Sunday night, rallying in the fourth quarter to defeat the Beaumont Renegades 41–32 in front of an electric crowd at the Frontwave Arena. The win marks the return of arena football to San Diego County for the first time in over two decades — and the home fans got every penny's worth of entertainment.
The Renegades, who won the National Arena League championship last season and carried over much of that roster — including league MVP quarterback Carl Robinson — struck first with a 23-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter. A missed extra point left it 6–0.
The Bombers answered quickly. Quarterback Rudy Johnson connected with wide receiver Jaylon Tucker for a touchdown to knot the score at six, and from there the two teams traded blows like prizefighters on the 50-yard field.
Robinson and his favorite target, Zuri Davis, torched the Bombers secondary to push Beaumont ahead 13–6, but Oceanside punched right back to tie it. A late first-half surge saw the Renegades grab a 19–13 lead on an 11-yard scoring strike, only for the Bombers to capitalize on a turnover and score with just 34 seconds remaining to take a stunning 20–19 lead into the break.
Beaumont's Robinson — a true dual-threat quarterback — took over in the third quarter, using his legs and his arm to march the Renegades downfield. A scramble deep into Bombers territory set up a dramatic deflected pass that was hauled in for a touchdown, giving Beaumont a 26–21 advantage after the extra point.
The Bombers, however, refused to fold. Johnson orchestrated a grinding drive that ended at the goal line, where Oceanside needed four cracks to finally punch it in. Johnson stretched across on fourth down to give the Bombers a 28–26 lead heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter delivered the kind of chaos that makes arena football irresistible.
Robinson responded immediately, hitting Vincent Wilkerson II for a quick-strike touchdown to put the Renegades back on top 32–28. The extra point sailed wide, leaving the door open — and the Bombers kicked it down.
On the ensuing kickoff, the ball ricocheted off the net and the Renegades couldn't handle it. Donavan Thurman scooped up the loose ball and walked into the end zone for a go-ahead score. After an official review upheld the touchdown, Frontwave Arena erupted. The Bombers led 34–32, though a blocked extra point kept it a two-point game with just over three minutes remaining.
The defense did the rest. David Haney — who was seemingly everywhere all night long, playing both sides of the ball and nearly coming down with multiple interceptions — helped force a critical turnover on downs deep in Renegades territory. The Bombers cashed in with another touchdown run by Johnson with 38 seconds left, and Brent Reis's extra point pushed the lead to 41–32.
Beaumont's backup quarterback Andrew McBride entered for the final seconds but couldn't find the end zone, and Haney sealed the victory with an interception as time expired.
For an expansion franchise playing its first game together, the Bombers showed remarkable poise against a battle-tested opponent. Head Coach Cree Morris — a former AFL quarterback himself and Orange Glen High School product — had his squad ready from the opening whistle.
Johnson was dynamic at quarterback, using his legs to extend plays and his arm to find Tucker, Tajae Brooks (El Camino), and Vincent Strange Jr. throughout the night. The defense, anchored by co-captain Lance Desorbo and the versatile Haney, made the game-changing plays when it mattered most.
"This has been a labor of love," Bombers owner Vernon told the broadcast team during the second half. "To see the energy exhibited through the fans and the sense of pride and ownership for a home team — this has been a phenomenal success."
The Renegades, despite the loss, showed why they were champions a year ago. Robinson was electric, and Davis was a handful every time he touched the ball. But too many missed extra points and costly turnovers in the fourth quarter proved to be their undoing.
The Bombers return to the Frontwave Arena on May 3rd for their next home game. Meanwhile, on Sunday, April 19th, they'll travel to the Truist Arena in Highland Heights, KY for a Noon meeting with the Kentucky Barrels.
