Not since the league began tracking sacks as an official statistic in 1982 has a linebacker posted eight or more tackles, at least two interceptions, a pick-six, and a sack in the same game.
Lloyd led all players with nine tackles, including a critical fourth-down stop. He generated pressure with a sack, disrupted passing lanes with pass breakups (one of which set up a teammate interception by Bobby Okereke early), and finished with the ball in his hands twice. His first interception featured a one-handed grab and a 53-yard return. The second, later in the third quarter, he returned for a touchdown—his second career pick-six and Carolina’s first defensive score of the season.
The performance helped the Panthers bounce back emphatically from a disastrous Week 1 loss in which they surrendered 59 points. Against Atlanta, Carolina’s defense limited the Falcons to just three points while forcing turnovers and controlling the line of scrimmage.
“I don’t know if I’ve seen a better performance out of a linebacker in 17 years of coaching in the NFL," head coach Dave Canales told the media. "It’s a tribute to his study and being in the right spot. I didn’t realize his hands were that good… One of the most dominant linebacker performances I’ve seen.”
Teammates echoed the sentiment. Cornerback Jaycee Horn called it “probably the most dominant performance I’ve seen from a defensive player since I’ve been here,” while defensive end Derrick Brown noted Lloyd should be a strong candidate for NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Lloyd signed a three-year, $45 million contract with Carolina in free agency in March 2026 after four seasons with the Jaguars. In 2025 with Jacksonville he earned second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, leading or ranking among the league leaders with five interceptions (including a franchise-record 99-yard pick-six against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs) while remaining productive against the run and as a pass rusher.
A 2022 first-round pick out of Utah, Lloyd has steadily developed into a three-down linebacker with elite ball skills for the position. His 2026 debut against the Falcons validated the Panthers’ investment and provided an early statement performance in a new defensive scheme.
Comparisons have already been drawn to past Panthers greats such as Luke Kuechly for the all-around dominance, though the specific statistical package is unique in the post-1982 era.
Lloyd’s afternoon was a master class in modern linebacker play: physical at the point of attack, instinctive in zone and man coverage, and opportunistic with the ball. For a Panthers defense looking to establish identity after a rough start, it was the ideal tone-setter.
