Steele Canyon cruise past Grossmont to set up marquee regular-season finale
EL CAJON (10/25/2019) Making the first start of his varsity career, junior quarterback Elia Kirisimasi completed 11-of-20 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns to help the No. 5 Steele Canyon Cougars (9-0) pull off a 58-3 rout over the No. 10 Grossmont Foothillers (6-3).
The win sets up next week's Grossmont Hills League championship game against No. 1 Helix, who will be seeking redemption after the Cougars upset them last season. This could also be the deciding factor in Steele Canyon's first-ever Open Division berth.
Kirisimasi, who filled in for injured starter Jeremy Mendez-Gal, also rushed for 32 yards and a seven-yard touchdown. He completed passes to eight different receivers, including Antwone Walker who scored on an 80-yard bomb from Chris Carter on the very first play of the game, then went on to grab a 10-yarder from Kirisimasi that put Steele Canyon up 21-3 in the second quarter.
A 26-yard field goal by Axel Gonzalez were the only points Grossmont could manage as the Cougars rolled to their first 9-0 start in school history.
Wesley Neely III found the end zone twice in the second half and finished with 122 rushing yards on 17 carries.
A dominant defensive performance was assisted by Viliamu-Ah-You Morse, who recorded his school-record 11th sack of the season.
Carter showed his versatility by scoring on a pass, run, and punt return.
