San Diego Prep Football Preview: Servite @ Oceanside

Servite Friars (Anaheim, CA) at Oceanside Pirates
(Sept. 1, 2011)

Coming off their 7th straight championship season, it comes as no surprise that the Oceanside Pirates will begin the new season ranked #1 in the county. The Pirates will begin their journey for an 8th straight section title when they host defending CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 champion Servite, who defeated them in last season's opener 31-7. Servite comes into this game ranked #1 in the state and as high as #4 in the nation in some polls. They enter the 2011 season returning most of their top starters from last season's 14-1 campaign that ended with a 48-8 lost to De La Salle in the State Championship.

Tale of the Tape:

OCEANSIDE

Coach: John Carroll (23rd year)
2010 Overall Record: 10-3
Returning Starters: 11

Key Players:
Senior OL Eduardo Middleton 6'5 300lbs
Senior OL Grant Bays 6'3 300lbs
Junior QB Tofi Paopao 6'1 205lbs

Team Strengths: Both Lines, LBs, QB
Team Weaknesses: Lack of Depth

SERVITE

Coach: Troy Thomas (7th year)
2010 Overall Record: 14-1
Returning Starters: 13

Key Players:
Senior ILB/QB Butch Pauu 5'11 215lbs
Senior OL/DL Travis Averill 6'4 265lbs
Senior WR/DB Sam Hunt 6'6 205lbs

Team Strengths: Experienced Starters On Offense
Team Weaknesses: Couldn't Find Any

My Prediction:

Expect an epic showdown between these two powerhouses. Oceanside will come into this game fired up and anxious to avenge last season's embarrassing blowout lost but I have a feeling Servite will end up coming out on top again in a contest that will be decided within the last minute.

Servite 27, Oceanside 20
