San Diego Prep Football Preview: Cathedral Catholic @ Torrey Pines

Cathedral Catholic Dons at Torrey Pines Falcons
(Sept. 9, 2011)

Last Meeting: 09/10/10 Torrey Pines 10 @ Cathedral 0

After avenging last year's loss to Steele Canyon in their home opener, the defending D-III champion Dons will travel to Torrey Pines this Friday to kick-off a gauntlet of 4 consecutive non-league road games. 3 out of those 4 games will be against teams who are currently in the Top 10*. For Torrey Pines, a home opening win over Cathedral could do wonders for their momentum after starting the season with a blow out win at Colton.

Tale of the Tape:

CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC (1-0)

Division: III
League: Eastern
Coach: Sean Doyle (16th year)
Last Weeks Result: Defeated Steele Canyon 27-7

Rankings:
#4 San Diego Union Tribune
#5 North County Times

Key Players (Last Weeks Performance):
Junior RB Tony Johnson (Carried the ball 21 times for 107 yards)
Senior SS Patrick Downing (2 INTs, one returned for TD)

TORREY PINES (1-0)

Division: II
League: Palomar
Coach: Scott Ashby (5th year)
Last Weeks Result: Defeated Colton (Colton, Ca) 35-7

Rankings:
#7 San Diego Union Tribune
#6 North County Times

Key Players (Last Weeks Performance):
Junior RB Billy Maggs (Rushed for 123 yards on just 10 carries)

My Prediction:

After cake walking thru week 1, this should be the first true test of the season for both Cathedral and Torrey Pines. At this point of the season it’s hard to tell who the better team is but from what I see on paper, Cathedral has the edge on both sides of the ball. The Dons will leave this game with the W but it won't be easy.

Cathedral Catholic 35, Torrey Pines 24
