Chargers vs. 49ers Preseason Recap

Logos by teclemson53

SAN FRANCISCO (08-30-12) The Chargers won't have a perfect preseason after all. They were blown out by the San Francisco 49ers 35-3 in the last "meaningless" game before the regular season opener.

On the bright side:

- The Chargers are leaving San Francisco with no injuries.

- Former San Diego Torero Josh Johnson put himself in a great position to win the final spot on the 49ers' quarterback depth chart. He completed nine out of 14 of his passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 50 yards on five carries.

Next for the Chargers is a visit to Oakland on September 10th for their regular season opener against the Raiders. It will be the second game of a Monday Night Football double header on ESPN. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. pacific time.

Final: Chargers 12 Minnesota 10

MINNEAPOLIS (08-24-12) The San Diego Chargers finish their third week of preseason play by edging out a win over the Minnesota Vikings. Kicker Nick Novak nailed a 45-yard field goal as time expired.

The Chargers defensive unit had an impressive night. They only allowed three 3rd down conversions, recorded five sacks, and forced the Vikings to turn the ball over four times. Two of those turnovers were forced fumbles that took place after the Vikings drove the ball more than 70 yards down the field.

On an unfortunate note, highly touted rookie linebacker Melvin Ingram had to leave the game late in the third quarter after bruising his left thigh. On the bright side, Ingram is only expected to miss next week's preseason finale against the San Francisco 49ers and he should be good to go for the regular season opener at Oakland.

Among other key starters, head coach Norv Turner and staff decided to sit quarterback Phillip Rivers. That turned out to be the right decision after the offensive line allowed back-up Charlie Whitehurst to be sacked five times.

Chargers vs. Cowboys Preseason Recap

QUALCOMM STADIUM (08-18-12) The San Diego Chargers overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Dallas Cowboys 28-20 and pick up their second win of the 2012 preseason.

Quarterback Philip Rivers played the entire first half and it was one to forget. Although he completed 13 out of 15 passes for 109 yards, Rivers was picked off on two consecutive drives by the same defender, Dallas cornerback Brandon Carr.

His first interception was caused by an under thrown pass intended for wide receiver Robert Meachem. The second interception bounced off the hands of wide receiver Vincent Brown and into the juggling hands of Carr.

Back-up quarterback Charlie Whitehurst looked surprisingly better when he took over in the second half. He completed 7 out of 10 passes for 122 yards and two impressive looking touchdowns.

National City Bears 2012 Schedule

After an impressive 2011 season in the LCFL, the National City Bears join the newly formed California Football Alliance. The Bears are 1-0 after defeating the California Tide 24-21 in last week's season opener. They open their home schedule against the California Dolphins this Saturday at Sweetwater High School.

As expected, quarterback Phillip Rivers saw limited action. He completed three out of five passes, recorded 37 passing yards, hit tight end Antonio Gates for the first touchdown of the game, and threw an interception while trying to force a pass to wide receiver Robert Meachem.

Second time's a charm for the perfect Surge

PITTSBURGH (08-04-12) On a sunny afternoon at Heinz Field, the San Diego Surge (12-0) earned their first Women's Football Alliance national title after a 40-36 victory over the Chicago Force (11-1).

A fast start gave the Surge a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, but they would find themselves down 27-36 with 2:28 left to play in the fourth. Their championship hopes were looking bleak. They were going to need two unanswered scores or else end another stellar season with a championship loss.
