Three 2013 CIF Section Champions Crowned

The season-long debate over who's the No. 1 team in the county has finally come to a close. Mission Hills made it perfectly clear after defeating Oceanside to claim the first-ever San Diego Section Open Division title at Qualcomm Stadium.

Mission Hills Grizzlies (12-1)
Defeated Oceanside 36-14

Prior to the 2013 season, Mission Hills had never beaten Oceanside or won a CIF section championship despite three appearances in the finals. The Grizzlies left Qualcomm Stadium Monday night with their second-straight win over the Pirates and the first section title in their ten-year history.

The Pirates led 14-10 at halftime, but turnovers and miscues in the second half helped the Grizzlies put the game away with 26 unanswered points.

Ricky Liuchan had a big night for the Grizzlies on both sides of the ball. The senior rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries and scored off a 35-yard interception return.

Defeated San Pasqual 37-31

After a 17-17 tie at the end of regulation, San Pasqual and Cathedral answered each other's touchdowns for two overtimes.

In the third overtime, Dons linebacker Jack Onstott decided that he had seen enough. The junior picked off Sebastian Tengan's pass at the 2-yard line and returned it 94 yards for the game-winning touchdown.

It was the first time in San Diego Section championship history that a football game was decided in overtime.

Senior running back Chris Moliga led the Dons' ground attack with 168 yards and two touchdowns.
