Weekend Recap: Chargers stomp the Giants, College & Prep Bowl Games Decided

 
Chargers defeat the Giants 37-14

QUALCOMM STADIUM (12/08/2013) Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns (all in the first half) and 249 yards to help the San Diego Chargers (6-7) come away with a 37-14 win over the New York Giants (5-8).

The Chargers are now 3-0 against Eli Manning since the infamous 2004 NFL Draft, where the first overall pick was traded to the Giants for Rivers.

Ryan Mathews led the Chargers rushing attack with 103 yards and a touchdown. Rookie receiver Kennan Allen (59 yards & 2 TDs) and running back Danny Woodhead (52 yards & 1 TD) were Rivers' key targets through the air.

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker Donald Butler and cornerback Shareece Wright each recorded an interception.

The Chargers will have a short week as they head to Denver for a Thursday night showdown against Peyton Manning and the first place Broncos (11-2). The Broncos defeated the Chargers 28-20 at Qualcomm Stadium on Nov. 10.

 
Aztecs invited to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
 
After a week worth of concerns about being left out of the bowl race, the San Diego State Aztecs (7-5, 6-2 MWC) accepted an invitation to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where they'll face the Buffalo Bulls (8-4, 6-2 MAC) on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 2:30 p.m. pacific time.

The game takes place at Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho and will be televised live on ESPN.

This will be a school-record fourth straight bowl appearance for the Aztecs after only appearing in consecutive bowl games in 1966 and 1967. It also matches their total amount of appearances from 1969 to 2009.

Mission Hills to play for D-I State Championship
 
The San Diego Section Open Division champion Mission Hills Grizzlies (12-1) received an invitation to host the Bakersfield Drillers (11-2) on Saturday, Dec. 14th in the Division I State Bowl Regionals.
 
Two more 2013 CIF Section Champions Crowned
 
MESA COLLEGE (12/07/2013) After starting the season 1-4, the Sweetwater Red Devils (9-4) finished with eight straight wins and its first section title since 1984. The Red Devils defeated Monte Vista (7-6) 7-0 in the Division IV Championship. It was the lowest scoring championship game in CIF San Diego Section history.

The lone touchdown took place in the fourth quarter after running back Raven Middleton connected with Antonio Garcia on a 15-yard halfback pass.
 
In the main event of the evening, the Christian Patriots (12-1) took home their ninth section title in school history after a 19-7 win over San Marcos (9-5) in the Division III Championship.

The Patriots will learn their bowl faith this Monday, Dec. 9th during a court hearing to determine if they qualify to compete in the Division IV state playoffs.
