Surge remain undefeated after a convincing win over the War Angels

Ashley Moody (#16) returns her second interception of the game.

SANTEE (05/17/2014) In front of their biggest crowd of the season, the San Diego Surge (7-0) added another dominating performance to their resume.

This time it came at the expense of the Central Cal War Angels (4-1), who knocked the Surge out of the WFA playoffs last season.

Melissa Gallegos threw four touchdown passes, Ashley Moody had two interceptions including one that was returned for a touchdown, and Deana Guidry scored three times to help the Surge roll to a 64-0 victory.

"We game planned for the same type of game that took us out of the playoffs last year," said head coach William Harris. "We had a big chip on our shoulder and I'm thankful that it worked out the way it did."

The War Angels began the game attempting to wear out the Surge defense with their powerful rushing attack, but the Surge wasn't having it. A three-and-out led to a 53-yard touchdown pass from Gallegos to Guidry on their first offensive possession. The two-point conversion gave the Surge an early 8-0 lead.

When the run game wasn't panning out, the War Angels decided to go to the air, but Chantel Wiggins' pass to Lisa King was picked off by Melissa Strother.

Showing off her ironwoman ability, Strother stayed on the field and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Gallegos to extend the Surge lead to 14-0.

"I'm lucky that I get to play both sides of the ball," said Strother, who is also the kicker. "When things aren't working well for me on offense, I can go on defense and be more aggressive."

After forcing a turnover on downs, the Surge gave the ball right back after fumbling on their own 25-yard line.

The momentum change was short lived after an 85-yard interception return by Moody increased the Surge lead to 22-0 late in the first quarter.

"Ashley Moody did her job," said Harris. "She read the play, jumped that route, and a girl with that kind of speed when she hits the edge, there's no catching her."

After the Surge defense forced another turnover on downs, Guidry scored again off a 67-yard run to give the Surge a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Miscues on offense continued to doom the War Angels. After losing a fumble on the 21-yard line, Gallegos drove the Surge offense down the field and found Holly Peterson for a 23-yard touchdown.

After another interception by Moody, back-up quarterback Whitney Westman threw a pass to Kaycee Clark who pitched it back to Alexis Snyder before she ran it in for a touchdown. The hook-and-ladder play gave the Surge a commanding 42-0 lead at halftime.

The War Angel's defense opened the second half by forcing a turnover on downs, but a fumble on their ensuing possession proved that it just wasn't their night.

Gallegos took advantage by connecting with Clark for 28-yard touchdown and the Surge ended the third quarter with a 48-0 lead.

Touchdown runs by Guidry and Jordan Sablan put a stamp on the Surge victory in the fourth quarter, ending the War Angel's hopes of a perfect season.

"These girls were out here fighting," said Gallegos. "It was a lot more than what that scoreboard showed. It was a lot of fight out there."

Both teams get two weeks off before they face off again in Fresno on June 7th.
