Prep Football: San Diego Section goes 2-2 in CIF State Championships

Four San Diego Section teams played in Saturday night's CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games, but only two would end their 2015 campaign with a state title.

2015 Division III-A State Champions
RANCHO BERNARDO BRONCOS (13-2)
Defeated Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton, CA) 35-14

After a defensive struggle for most of the first quarter, Milan Grice exploded 42-yard for the game's opening touchdown, setting the tone for the first state title in Rancho Bernardo history.

The Broncos found the end zone once again as Mark Salazar's quarterback sneak extended the lead to 14-0 with 8:21 left in the first half. As time expired before halftime, Sacred Heart Prep got on the board with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Mason Randall to Andrew Daschbach, cutting Rancho Bernardo's lead to 14-7.

In the third quarter, an interception by Anthony Barnum set up a 22-yard touchdown strike from Salazar to Devaughn Vele. The Gators struck back on the first play of the ensuing drive. Randall and Daschbach connected again on a 76-yarder to cut the Broncos' lead to 21-14 with 1;40 left in the third.

The fourth quarter was all RB as a 1-yard run by Grice and a 20-yard pass to Vele completed 14 unanswered points to seal the win.

2015 Division V-AA State Champions
MATER DEI CATHOLIC CRUSADERS (14-1)
Defeated Immanuel (Reedley, CA) 56-21

Mater Dei Catholic went up 35-0 before Immanuel got on the board in the third quarter, as they would go on to cruise to their first state title in program history.

Quarterback Chris Jones totaled 290 yards and was responsible for four touchdowns (two runs, two pass), while C.J. Verdell put up 126 yards and two scores on the ground.

With the victory, the Crusaders have now won 13 straight games since forfeiting their week two win over El Capitan.
