The North County Stars ended last season on a positive note, winning its final two games following an 0-5 start.

With a crop of new talent joining the team that includes perennial All-Americans with national championship experience, the Stars are primed to have a huge turn-around this year.

One of the new key contributors is Knengi Martin, who joins the squad after four impactful seasons with the San Diego Surge. The 2014 WFA Defensive Player of the Year is expected to be a valuable asset on and off the field.

“Anytime you bring in a player like her, it makes an impact right away,” head coach Calvin McClain said when speaking on Martin. “She helps us coaches a lot, because she sets a good example for young players with her work ethic.”

Last season Martin led the Surge in tackles, tackles for loss, and also recorded two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

The North County offensive line, which is coming off two straight seasons blocking for an IWFL First-Team All-Star rusher, will also receive a boost with the addition of former Surge veteran Jessica Cable.

“When it all comes together, we'll see how much we improved,” McClain added. “But right now, we're just trying to get better everyday.”
