2016 Outlook

By David A. Willauer - Contributing Writer

Following an 0-7 start to 2015, fourth-year head coach Paul Gomez announced that he would retire at the end of the season.

Less than two months later, Rancho Buena Vista hired Joe Meyer, a longtime prep football coaching veteran and the son of legendary former El Camino coach Herb Meyer.

Meyer served as an assistant with the Wildcats for 19 years. He also held assistant positions at RBV and Army-Navy, and was the head coach at Scripps Ranch from 2010 to 2014.

The Longhorns' Power I offense will feature key players such as quarterback Ace Roach, running back Anthony Bowman, and wide receiver Noah Watson.

Meyer is also expecting big things from younger receivers such as Trent Broger, Tony Morales and Jose Rivera, who played on the JV squad last season.

“Roach will be looking for key targets to throw to this season,” Meyer says. “These players stepped up for our squad during the summer.”

The offensive line will feature senior guard Anthony Escalante, center Daniel Molano and junior left tackle William Osterhout.

Defensively Rancho Buena Vista will line up in a 3-4 formation. RBV returns many players from last season, but linebacker Braxton Ransaw stands out as the player to watch.

The Longhorns will kick off the season at home against Paloma Valley (Menifee, CA), who finished 7-4 last season.

“They're a good team and have skilled players,” complemented Meyer. “We have to be ready to play solid football and play well.”
