Rushing Attack propels Surge over Rebellion

SANTEE, CA (04/06/2019) Deana Guidry and Adriana Gutierrez notched three rushing touchdowns each as the San Diego Surge (1-0) kicked off the 2019 season with a 42-14 victory over the San Diego Rebellion (0-1).

The Rebellion struck first when Knengi Martin found a wide open Kristin Smereczynski for the first touchdown of the game. On the ensuing possession, Deana Guidry broke four tackles on her way to a 23-yard run to the end zone, tying the game at 7-7 with 5:44 left in the first quarter.

After the Surge defense forced a punt, Guidry scored again, this time going untouched on an 84-yard scramble to put the team ahead 14-7.

Following another three-and-out, Gutierrez exploded for a 49-yard touchdown on the first play of the drive, extending the lead to 21-7.

Martin's 35-yard quarterback keeper was the only score of the second quarter, but the Rebellion still trailed at halftime, 21-14.

The Surge didn't allowed any points in the second half as they would pull away with a 21-0 run.

Next Saturday, the Rebellion will return to action when they host the Los Angeles Bobcats at Balboa Stadium. The Surge will get two straight bye weeks before their road game against the Las Vegas Silver Stars on April 27th.
