Gutierrez' team-record performance lifts Rebellion to dominating win

BUCKEYE, AZ (05/13/2021) Adriana Gutierrez found the end zone a career-high five times as the San Diego Rebellion (2-0) defeated the Phoenix Prowlers (0-2) 49-0 Saturday night.

Gutierrez now hold the team's single game records for rushing (4) and total touchdowns (5).

"I came into this game really hungry," Gutierrez said. "I told myself that I was going to run like it was the last time I’d touch the ball."

Knengi Martin, the previous holder of both records, was responsible for three touchdowns, with her first being a 13-yard quarterback keeper that gave the Rebellion a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

She then went on to connect with rookie Sammie Heck for her first career touchdown catch. The 20-yarder extended the San Diego lead to 14-0.

Following a defensive stop, Gutierrez finished another scoring drive by breaking away from a tackle before rushing 17 yards to the end zone for her first touchdown of the game, boosting the Rebellion lead to 21-0 with 1:26 left to play in the first.

"My line did phenomenal," Gutierrez praised. "It’s my responsibility to reward them by putting points on the scoreboard."

The remainder of the game was all Gutierrez and a shutout performance by a swarming Rebellion defense. An interception and long return by Taranisha Taylor set up a 29-yard touchdown run on the following play to pull away 35-0 in the third quarter.

Off to their first 2-0 start since its 2018 inaugural season, the Rebellion will hit the road again to face the Los Angeles Bobcats next Saturday.
