Martin's three-touchdown performance sparks "home-opening" victory for Rebellion

DEL MAR HEIGHTS - In their first home game played in San Diego County this season, Knengi Martin scrambled for three touchdowns to lead the San Diego Rebellion (5-0) to a 28-6 win over the visiting Las Vegas Silver Stars (4-2).

On their opening drive, the Silver Stars were threatening to draw first blood, until Ashlee Austin-Bean's picked off Shawnee Phillips' pass in the end zone on fourth down.

That would eventually set-up an 80-yard drive that ended with Martin's first touchdown run of the game, giving the Rebellion an early 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, following both teams exchanging punts, Phillips' pass was intercepted again by Taranisha Taylor. On the following play from scrimmage, Martin was picked off by Denajha Kie, who would go on to score on a touchdown pass from Phillips. The 20-yard connection ended San Diego's scoreless streak at 12 quarters. A blocked extra point kept the Rebellion leading 7-6.

Set up by a 50-yard kickoff return by Adriana Gutierrez, San Diego answered with a 32-yard touchdown run by Martin, increasing the lead to 14-6 at halftime.

The second half kicked off with another big play from Taylor, this time a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to increase San Diego's lead to 20-6.

In the fourth quarter, Martin took off for her third and final score of the game to seal the Rebellion's fifth win of the season. Next week they will close out the regular season at Westview High School for their first-ever meeting with the Oregon Ravens.

Rebellion adds to best start in team history following shutout at Seattle

KENT, WA (06/05/2021) The fourth-ranked San Diego Rebellion improves to 4-0 after defeating the 11th-ranked Seattle Majestics (1-2) Saturday night 21-0. They will enjoy a bye next week before ending the regular season slate with a two-game home stretch.

Like the first meeting, which ended with San Diego pulling off a 21-12 win to open the season, both teams were held scoreless in the first quarter. The Rebellion struck first when Mykaleen Hiura's pass was intercepted by Felicia Lilo and returned the other way for the first touchdown of the game.

The second pick-six of the year for the Rebellion defense gave San Diego a 7-0 advantage at halftime.

Facing fourth and goal, Knengi Martin connected with leading receiver Sammi Heck, who took the screen pass 15 yards to the corner of the endzone for the fourth touchdown of her rookie campaign. The clutch play extended the Rebellion lead to 14-0 late in the third quarter.

Martin would score again in the final quarter on a 31-yard scramble that proved to be the game-winner.

Seattle's final chance to put points on the board ended with Hiura's pass towards the end zone getting picked off by linebacker Mercedes Tyler, who sealed the team's third straight shutout victory.

The Rebellion are scheduled to host the Las Vegas Silver Stars at Torrey Pines High School on June 19th.
