Video: Surge players form coaching staff at Patrick Henry

After completing her seventh season playing offensive tackle for the San Diego Surge women's football team, Eboni Chambers was hired to be the head football coach of the Patrick Henry High School freshman squad.

She was joined by teammates Melissa Strother, Mercedes Tyler, Sonfre Roberson, and Rebekah LaMie to form the only football coaching staff in San Diego Prep Football to feature all women.

We caught up with all five coaches during the team's preseason scrimmage to discuss working with teammates, the differences between playing and teaching football, and advice for young women who may have similar aspirations.

Enforcers leave the Big Apple victorious

JJ Carrell threw for three touchdown passes to help the San Diego Enforcers (2-0) pull off a 38-10 win over the NYCD Boldest (0-1), a team made up of members of the New York City Department of Correction.

After Carrell connected with Leland Ellsworth for the first score of the game, the Boldest answered with a field goal to make it 7-3 to end the first quarter.

San Diego recovered a fumble on the NYCD 20-yard line, but could only capitalize with a field goal of their own, extending their lead to 10-3 going into halftime.

Carrell's second touchdown pass of the day went to Ocap Guerrero to pull away 17-3, but a New York touchdown cut it to 17-10.

The Enforcers would go on to finish the game on a 21-0 run to seal the win. They return home on April 20th for a rescheduled contest against the Chicago Blaze, taking place at Cathedral Catholic High School.

2019 WNFC Season Preview

While the Women's National Football Conference kicks off its inaugural season this Saturday, April 6th, the league has been making some game-changing moves since it was announced last August

With major companies like Adidas and Riddell Sports providing corporate sponsorships, as well as incentives for player performance, the WNFC has the potential to launch Women's Football into the mainstream in the near future.

San Diego is the only market with two teams (Surge & Rebellion) competing in this promising league, so our interest is obviously high.

Here is our preview of the founding members who will compete for the first-ever Title IX Cup, awarded to the team who wins the WNFC National Championship game in Denver on Saturday, June 29th.

Surge preps for Las Vegas Tournament

Best of the West Women's Football Championship (Round 1)
San Diego Surge (4-1) vs. Texas Elite Spartans (4-0)
Sunrise Mountain High School (Las Vegas, NV)
Thursday, July 19th, 2018 @ 8:00 p.m. PST

Breakdown

Two months removed from their last game, the Surge are anxious to get back on the field as they get set to compete in a four-team tournament where they'll be guaranteed two games in a three-day span.

"I don't think anyone is ready to play two games in three days, but we're going to make the best out of it." said two-way standout Deana Guidry, who leads the Surge in total touchdowns this season.

With the Las Vegas temperature expected to be as high as 106 degrees on game day, this could likely be a grueling competition for all teams involved.

"We have to deal with the heat, but everybody is going to get the same element," Guidry said. "It's going to be about who wants it more, and who's better prepared."

Video: Surge cruises past LA Bobcats in IWFL debut

LOS ANGELES, CA (04/14/2018) Six different players found the end zone for the San Diego Surge (1-0) during its 72-8 rout over the Los Angeles Bobcats (0-2) last night.

The Surge began their assault on the scoreboard when quarterback Melissa Gallegos connected with Deana Guidry for a 23-yard touchdown strike, but the Bobcats responded on their first play from scrimmage with a 70-yard run for a score.

A successful two-point conversion gave Los Angeles an 8-7 lead, but it was short lived after San Diego's ensuing possession.

A four-play drive ended with rookie Briana Gorrell bulldozing defenders for her first of two touchdown runs. The nine-yard score sparked 65 unanswered points for the Surge, which included multiple rushing touchdowns by Adriana Gutierrez and Sophia Lofton.

Next week San Diego opens its home schedule against the Nevada Storm. This will be the first meeting between the teams since the Surge came away with a 56-6 victory in 2014.
