Winning a CIF San Diego Section championship is hard. But reaching 14 or 15 victories in a single season? That's a benchmark only the most dominant programs in section history have achieved—an elite club that represents the very best of San Diego Prep Football.

The Unmatched Standard: Only one team in the history of the San Diego Section has ever finished 15–0. In 2016, Cathedral Catholic ran the table, culminating in an overtime thriller against Stockton St. Mary’s to claim the CIF State Division 1-AA title.

The 1990 Morse Tigers: Before the 1990s, the 14-win mark was mathematically impossible due to shorter playoff brackets. Morse High School was the first to break through, doing it twice in three years (1990 and 1992) under Hall of Fame coach John Shacklett. The 1990 Morse Tigers are widely regarded as the greatest high school football team in San Diego Section history. Morse finished 14-0 and achieved several milestones that remain unmatched or high in the record books to this day. The Tigers set a then-California state record by scoring 649 points in a single season, averaging 46.3 points per game.

The roster was loaded with future college and professional talent, including: Gary Taylor (Rushed for 2,625 yards, which was a section record at the time.), Teddy Lawrence (A versatile quarterback who went to UCLA and was described as "the difference in every ballgame"), and Tommy Bennett (A defensive back who played in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals). The team was ranked 4th in the nation by USA Today at the end of the 1990 season.

The First State Champs: In 2008, the Cathedral Catholic Dons became the first team in section history to secure a State Title under the bowl game format. The Dons had a dominant season under head coach Sean Doyle, culminating in a 37-34 victory over St. Mary's of Stockton in the Division II State Championship Bowl.

Heartbreak in 2014: Both El Capitan and Oceanside reached 14 wins but fell just short in their state final games. El Capitan's loss was particularly famous, as they led 28-7 in the third quarter before a late comeback by Campolindo.

Undefeated & Unchallenged: Cathedral Catholic (2008, 2016), Oceanside (2009), and Bishop's (2010) are the only teams to finish a perfect 14-0 or better and win a State Championship.
