Highlights: San Diego Surge vs. Central Cal

Highlights from Saturday night's game between the San Diego Surge and the Central Cal War Angels.

Surge remain undefeated after a convincing win over the War Angels

Ashley Moody (#16) returns her second interception of the game.

SANTEE (05/17/2014) In front of their biggest crowd of the season, the San Diego Surge (7-0) added another dominating performance to their resume.

This time it came at the expense of the Central Cal War Angels (4-1), who knocked the Surge out of the WFA playoffs last season.

Melissa Gallegos threw four touchdown passes, Ashley Moody had two interceptions including one that was returned for a touchdown, and Deana Guidry scored three times to help the Surge roll to a 64-0 victory.

"We game planned for the same type of game that took us out of the playoffs last year," said head coach William Harris. "We had a big chip on our shoulder and I'm thankful that it worked out the way it did."

Game Preview: Unbeaten Surge seeks redemption against Unbeaten War Angels

San Diego Surge (6-0) vs. Central Cal War Angels (4-0)
Santana High School (Santee, CA)
Saturday, May 17, 2014 5:30 p.m.
PST

After six weeks of smooth sailing, the San Diego Surge are set for what should be their toughest matchup of the season.

The Central Cal War Angels come to town this Saturday with a perfect record and will be looking for their second straight win over the Surge. The last time these teams faced off was during last season's conference semifinals where the War Angels came away with a 40-14 victory, forcing the Surge to miss the national title game for the first time in team history.

"We took the opening drive, went on down [to the goal line], they stopped us, and we never recovered," said Surge defensive coordinator Mike Suggett, who served as the team's head coach from 2011 to 2013.

"We lacked the speed and experience in some key positions to do what we wanted to do."

With more depth on both sides of the ball, the Surge are hoping for better results this time around.

Giants draft Berhe, Chargers draft a Giant

Giants select SS Nat Berhe with the 152nd Overall Pick

After a five round wait, the San Diego State Aztecs finally got a player selected in the 2014 NFL Draft. The New York Giants took strong safety Nat Berhe with the 12th pick of the 5th round. After redshirting in 2009, Berhe started 41 games at the "Aztec" position in Rocky Long's 3-3-5 defense, where he logged a career total of 299 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five interceptions, 20 pass breakups, four fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. The three-time All-Mountain West selection was knocked for his size (5-foot-10 & 193 pounds) and called "a safety trapped in a cornerback's body", but his competitive nature and great instincts should give him a chance to compete for playing time as a rookie.

Chargers select NT Ryan Carrethers with the 165th Overall Pick

With Cam Thomas leaving for Pittsburgh during free agency, the Chargers needed a new monster to clog the middle of the defensive line. The Chargers might have found one in Ryan Carrethers, a 6-foot-1 and 337 pound nose tackle out of Arkansas State. His 32 bench reps were tied for third most in the combine, and he claims he can squat 700 pounds. The two-time All-Sun Belt selection was also an undefeated wrestler during his senior year of high school.

Chargers draft Attaochu & Watt in Day Two

The San Diego Chargers introduce their 2014 first round pick, TCU cornerback Jason Verrett.

For the second straight year, the San Diego Chargers traded a 4th round pick in order to move up seven spots in the second round to draft a linebacker.

After a making a deal with the Miami Dolphins, the Chargers moved up from No. 57 to No. 50 and selected Jeremiah Attaochu (Ah-tah-choo) out of Georgia Tech. Last year they took Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o.

Attaochu started in 37 games for Georgia Tech and racked up a school record 31.5 career sacks. He measured at 6-foot-3 and 252 pounds at the NFL Combine, but was unable to perform in any drills due to injuries to his hand and hamstring during the Senior Bowl.

With the 89th overall pick in the 3rd round, the Chargers went with Norte Dame guard Chris Watt. Watt is described as a good-sized physical player who has the ability to become a starter. Measured at 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds, Watt is expected to provide depth at multiple offensive line positions.

Video: CB Jason Verrett's first game at the Q

On October 8th 2011, the Texas Christian Horned Frogs came to town to take on the San Diego State Aztecs in a Mountain West Conference showdown at Qualcomm Stadium. Little did we know, a sophomore cornerback by the name of Jason Verrett would be a first round draft pick for the San Diego Chargers two years and seven months later.

Verrett recorded six tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and his first collegiate interception to help TCU come away with a 27-14 win over the Aztecs.

Chargers select TCU CB Jason Verrett with 1st round pick

With the 25th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers selected Jason Verrett, a cornerback out of Texas Christian University.

While Verrett may be undersized at 5'9" and 189 pounds, his competitiveness and explosive play could make this a great pick for the Chargers, who's lacking at the cornerback position after releasing Derek Cox this offseason.

Verrett earned 2013 co-Big 12 defensive player of the year honors after putting up 39 tackles, 14 passes deflections, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, one sack and a forced fumble. He was also one of the top performers in the combine after running a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash (2nd among CBs) and recording an impressive 39.0 inches in the vertical jump.

He could possibly be a match-up problem when going against taller wide receivers, but he's been known to hold his own, and isn't afraid to make his presence felt by delivering a big hit.
