Video: Surge eliminates top-seeded Central Cal in Overtime, 35-34

Surge Captains (Carmen Cruz, Melissa Gallegos, Christina Carrillo, & Shinobu Williams) get set for overtime coin toss.

CLOVIS, CA (06/18/2017) The No. 3 seeded San Diego Surge (7-3) will advance to its fifth-ever conference championship game after pulling off a stunning victory over the No. 1 seed Central Cal War Angels (7-1) in the second round of the WFA Playoffs Saturday night.

With Central Cal hanging on to a 28-20 lead with less than a minute to play, Lisa King's second consecutive drive-killing interception near the goal line appeared to put the War Angels in a position to lock up the win.

But all hopes were kept alive when a botched hand-off was recovered by the Surge defense.

Deana Guidry's 12-yard touchdown run followed by a successful two-pointer tied the game 28-28 to force the first overtime in Surge history.

Central Cal took the first possession and capped it with Alexis Snyder fighting her way to the end zone, giving the War Angels a 34-28 lead.

After the failed two-point conversion, the Surge responded with a six-play drive that ended with Melissa Gallegos' one-yard quarterback keeper for the game-tying touchdown.

Melissa Strother sealed the hard-earned victory by nailing the ensuing extra point.

The Pacific Region champions will have three weeks to prepare for the Midwest champion Dallas Elite (7-0). This will be second meeting between the teams, with the first being the 2015 conference final.
